Are your profile pics in desperate need of an update? Still using a photo from the early 2000’s? Don’t worry, we’ll have you updating your photos to this decade in no time (and looking bomb dot com). If you’re updating your Linkedin page or just need a new profile for Facebook choosing what you wear to represent you can be challenging. The tried and true question I always get when doing a headshot is “what should I wear?”. The short answer? Well. It depends. Are you going for a polished professional look–or something that embraces your quirky side, like your career as a clown? (Clowns need headshots too!) Those would be two wildly different photos. Planning a headshot? These quick Dallas photography tips will help you nail the look-the Texas way.

Headshot Photography Tip #1: Wear Colors That Compliment Your Dallas Swagger

The best way to find out what your complimentary colors are is to find out what your true skin tone is. You may already know what your skin tone is, but do you know if you are warm or cool toned? (Had to keep you on your toes there.) A good way to test what your skin tone is is by looking at the veins in your arms. If you have a lighter or cool skin tone your veins may be more visible and they will be blue. If you have a darker or warmer skin tone your veins are typically more olive. Now that we have our skin tones decided it’s time to pick colors that compliment us. If you are more warm complected try some greens, pinks, or grays. Those will make you really pop and make your headshot stand out! Alternatively, if you are more cool complected, dark blues or bright reds may better suit you. Bonus tip! Your hair and eye color also play a part in finding your shades, so play around with a few different options. This may just be the excuse you were looking for to go clothes shopping.

Headshot Photography Tips #2: Accessorize Yourself The Texan Way

You’ve spent a lot of money on your accessories so you should wear all of them, right? Not so fast! A few things to think about before picking up your expensive rings and watches are:

  •  Are you going to be in a studio controlled environment?

    • A studio controlled environment is a safer bet considering many businesses have cameras and insurance. I would be more confident wearing my accessories in a surveillance controlled space.

  • Are you going to be out in the public where theft can be an issue?

    • I have seen it before where a client decided to take their huge earrings off and place them in their bag and set the bag away from our eyesight just to get it out of the shot.

  • Are you willing to wear it throughout the shoot to maintain consistency?

    • If you have a pair of really expensive but very uncomfortable shoes are you ok taking some shots barefoot? (Make sure to have your toes done!)

Speak with your photographer so you can get an idea of what your headshot will look like. Is it going to be cropped close up and cut you off at your waist? If it is, do you really need to wear your expensive jewelry?

Headshot Photography Tip# 3: Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Confident (Ran Out Of Texas Puns!)

I think we all have a dedicated go-to outfit. For me, it's a grey henley and a pair of blue jeans that my wife hates. It just makes me feel secure, you know? So if you have a suit you feel slim in, or a dress that makes you feel fine, wear it. The best part of working with a skilled photographer is the fact that we are supposed to be ego boosters and yes men/women. We want to get that big smile out of you and make you feel confident. No one wants to work with someone who is disinterested. If you have the ability to wear your big poofy hat, or your rainbow tie. Wear it! At the end of the day, us photographers work for you. So if that’s what you want representing you, who are we to say no? Wear something that is comfy, fits well, and is you. The phrase “a picture speaks a thousand words” is true. So what story do you want to publish? Do you want to be portrayed as the person who appeared with a knot in their hair and a mustard stain on their shirt? (We could take that out in post but you know what I mean!) Or do you want to be seen as the chic fashionista you are or the suave bold hunk? The choice is yours.
