Sony FX2 Preview: Who Is This Camera Really For?

On May 28th, 2025 the world was introduced to the Sony FX2. Fans have eagerly waited for the arrival of new Sony gear since the A1 II was announced in late 2024. We expected the A7V or the FX4, instead we were met with a merger of the Alpha series and Sony’s Cinema Line. At $2698 is the Sony FX2 an upgrade? Is 33 megapixels in a cinema body a downgrade? Let’s discuss what the FX2 gets right, what the FX2 gets wrong, and how it compares to the FX3 and A7IV, especially for hybrid shooters.

Sony FX2: What It Gets Right.

The FX2 has a full frame 33MP sensor, which is a deviation from the FX3’s 13MP sensor. The push for more megapixels gives owners the flexibility to shoot higher-res photos. One of the new additions to this Cinema Line camera is the ability to swap between photo and video mode. With a new dial on the back of the body, users can quickly grab a still image without digging through menus. With the added depth to photography, the FX2 includes the ability to shoot your photos in Log profiles to capture more details and to give you full control when it comes to color grading. Another welcome change to this camera is the new addition of an adjustable EVF. The EVF is adjustable up to 90 degrees and includes an adjustable eyecup for those that favor the left eye over the right eye and vice versa. If you are a fan of shooting with an EVF then this one is for you.

Sony FX2: Where It Falls Short.

Cropped 4K 60p video shooting is back and you’d think for the $2698 price tag we’d get uncropped 4K 60p. With the added megapixels you begin to take from the low light performance that lower megapixel cameras benefit from. Fewer megapixels mean larger megapixels, and larger megapixels absorb more light, which in turn gives you crisper images in low light conditions. This begs the question as to who this camera was made for? Is it for photographers who dabble in video? Or is this a camera made for videographers who dabble in photography? A sticking point for me is that the FX2 shares the same sensor with the A7IV. I personally chose to rock the A7IV after enjoying my previous staple A7C because I do both photo and video projects. I would certainly have stopped to think about both the FX2 and A7IV if the FX2 was available during my upgrade decision. I would have asked myself, “Should I purchase the new FX2 at $2,698 or save a couple of bucks and pick up the A7IV at $2498 with the exact same sensor and recording codecs?”

Should You Buy The Sony FX2?

What the FX2 looks like to me is Sony clearing stock of the older sensors from the A7IV. It seems as though the FX2 is neither an upgrade to the FX3, nor an upgrade to the A7IV. So what purpose does it fill? I like the design of the FX3 and the specs to pair with it, but I could not justify the price tag when I needed a hybrid camera. But, if you are using an older camera like the A7III I could definitely see the allure to upgrade to the FX2. In fact, if you were looking for an upgrade that does photos and video well, I would even recommend the FX2. In my opinion, it’s an entry level camera to the Cinema Line series. It’s a step down from the FX3 at an affordable price, with the innards of the A7IV– Sony’s current flagship in the Alpha series line-up.

The reason I feel no remorse in missing out on the FX2, is that it feels like the A7IV hidden in an FX3 body. Without anything that pushes the needle for innovation the FX2 is underwhelming to me. The adjustable EVF is a cool addition, but since I wear glasses I wouldn’t be able to fully utilize it. The final feature I’ll mention is the addition of AI to assist in real time focus recognition. The use of AI to better help focus seems more like a buzzword than it does anything else. I suppose we’ll see how the camera handles when it releases later this year in August. So, final thoughts on the FX2? The FX2 might be one of the best hybrid Sony cameras under $3,000 for creators upgrading from older models like the A7III. However, if you’re like me and you already have gear that fills your needs then waiting for the A7V or the FX4 should be the move.
